Antennas vs IoT Antennas

Simply put, an antenna is a conductor exposed in space, which radiates energy during transmission and absorbs energy during reception.

How does an IoT antenna differ from a regular antenna?

Since IoT devices require enough signal to communicate over long or short ranges with low noise or interference generated by other devices, antennas can literally make or break your end product.

Depending on your application, if the wrong antenna is chosen, your devices might be impossible to reach in the field.

Types of Antennas

Antennas are not one-size-fits-all. We must consider operating frequency, the object it fits into, wireless protocols, frequency bands, board space, cost, communication distance, directivity and more.

Plenty of factors come into play. With that being said, here are the two main types of antennas:

  • External
    • Whip antennas (also known as rubber duck antennas) are the most common type of external antennas, typically used on gateways and WiFi routers.
  • Internal
    • Available as ceramic chip, patch, PCB trace and Flex PCB antennas, internal antennas – typically invisible to the user – are tailored to indoor environments such as offices, hotels, schools, etc. as they are aesthetically pleasing, however they are dependent on the object to which the antenna is attached.
